Channing began as a railroad junction called Fort Siding. Although the railroad is still active there is no longer passenger service.
In 1892, a post office was established named Channing, after John Parke Channing, a mining engineer who surveyed the area. The post office continues to serve ZIP code 49815.

There are three main road routes into Channing.
- The greater Channing area is served by the M-95 from the north and south. Channing is about 24 miles (39 km) north of Iron Mountain on M-95.
- From Ralph, the main route in is Turner Road.
By snowmobile
Channing is north of trail 16 and west of trail 5.
