Places in Delaware River Region
Understand
The Delaware River region is the part of the state under the heaviest influence of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. This means that this is a region that serves as a bedroom community for those who work in Philadelphia and hence commute there. Moreover, locals in this part of the state get their local television and radio from Philadelphia, as well as root for major sports teams based there.
Mercer County, though, is mixed between New York and Philadelphia media which means that locals get television and radio from both markets; it's also common to see sports fans from both areas converge side-by-side in this county.
Cities
- Camden — Located on the Delaware River east of Philadelphia. Home to the USS New Jersey, Adventure Aquarium, and Campbell's Field
- Cherry Hill — Regionally significant commercial and residential center, with lots of hotels, parkland (Cooper River Park), and shopping (Cherry Hill Mall).
- Haddonfield — Wealthy, vibrant town on the old King's Road in Camden County. Colonial history -- and the discovery site of the world's first dinosaur skeleton!
- Princeton — Home of Princeton University, as well as many research and technology organizations.
- Trenton — The state capital. Home of the New Jersey Capital Building (which is the second oldest capitol building in America)
- Bordentown — Site of the former homes of many famous New Jersey residents like Clara Barton and Joseph Bonaparte.
Get around
New Jersey Transit RiverLINE is a light rail line serving 20 stations between Trenton and Camden, New Jersey. The line connects with DRPA's PATCO Hi-Speed Line at Camden's Walter Rand Transportation Center. RiverLINE travels North-South along the Delaware River entirely in New Jersey. One-way fare between Trenton and Camden, NJ is $1.50. There are reduced fare options for senior citizens, children and families. Monthly passes are available. Trains come every 15 minutes during rush hours but only every 30 minutes at other times. There is no late evening service except on Saturday nights.
New Jersey Transit also provides bus service throughout the region.
Stay safe
If traveling to Camden, stay close to the Rutgers-Camden and Riverfront areas, especially at night. Many parts of Camden have very high crime rates and are not safe for independent sightseeing.
Despite southern Jersey being far from New York City, traffic is still very congested - especially on major roads like 42 and 295 - and cars do speed well above the limit in the left lanes. Take extra caution when driving; stick to the right lanes on major highways if you feel uncomfortable.
