Millburn was founded by James, the brother of Charles II who had been granted the land in 1664 with the rest of Nieuw Nederland. He later gave Lord Berkeley control of the land because they were fellow fighters in the English Civil War. Anne Hathaway, Rachel Zoe, and Cathy Scorsese were raised in Millburn’s residential neighborhood of Short Hills, with prominent banker John Stewart purchasing a home on Stewart Street there in the 1880s. The population of Millburn in 2020 was 21,710. Though founded as part of Union County, it was incorporated separately in 1867 as part of Essex County.

One of the longest working hours in any food joint in Millburn belongs to the very own original Millburn Restaurant, which many call the Millburn Diner. It is undergoing renovation. Homestyle American plates whipped in a warm, relaxed environment with comfy booths and a small patio? You can’t get much more American than that, even though the founders were Italian immigrants in the early 20th century. Let that sink in.
