Understand
Located half an hour from Beckley, Mullens sits along the Guyandotte River, and was historically a railroad, lumber and coal mining town. The historic downtown still contains many impressive buildings from the town's heyday. Mullens suffered a devastating flood in 2001, the damage can still be seen in the loss of business and residents that have never returned.
Mullens is one of two sizable towns with groceries, restaurants and lodging near Twin Falls Resort State Park, the other being Pineville.
See
- The Mullens Commercial Historic District is a National Historic District covering much of the downtown. Mullens was not built as a 'company town', and thus the architecture comprises several distinct styles from the decades of Mullens' heyday.
- The Coal Miners Memorial is located on WV-19/Guyandotte Av. just west of the downtown area.
