Get in
By car
Plano is easily accessible from Dallas by U.S. Route 75, which connects to Interstate 45 and runs straight through the east of the city. The nearest airports are Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and Love Field, each approximately 30 minutes’ drive outside Plano.
Taxis and cars for hire are also readily available.
By public transit
From DFW International Airport, you can get directly to Plano on DART rail by taking the Silver Line from Terminal B Station to 12th Street station, just south of downtown Plano. From 12th Street station, you can ride the Red Line or Orange Line a short distance north to either Downtown Plano station or Parker Road station.
Alternatively, you can take the DART Orange Line from Terminal A, though as the Orange Line goes to Plano via Downtown Dallas, this takes much longer than simply riding the Silver Line. During off-peak hours, the Orange Line ends at LBJ/Central Station, so you will have to transfer to the Red Line there to make it the rest of the way.
From Dallas Love Field Airport, take the DART shuttle bus from the lower level to reach Inwood/Love Field Station, from which you can take the Orange Line south through downtown Dallas to Plano or the Green Line north to Downtown Carrollton Station, where you can then transfer to the Silver Line.
Get around
By car
Driving a car is by far the best way (and likely the only reasonable way) to travel in Plano. Plano's major roads are in a grid system, which makes it very easy to drive around. Many local businesses will give an approximate location as the intersection of two major roads, such as Coit and Legacy. Major highways running through Plano include the Sam Rayburn Tollway (SH 121), the Dallas North Tollway, US 75, and the George Bush Turnpike.
By public transit
However, Dallas Area Rapid Transit, or DART, does run buses and two train lines in the city:
- the north-south Red Line, a light rail line that comes from Dallas in the south and stops in downtown Plano before terminating shortly afterward at Parker Road Station
- and the northeast-southwest Silver Line commuter train, which comes from DFW Airport in the southwest and connects with the Red Line at 12th Street station just south of downtown Plano before terminating at Shiloh Road to the east.
From Parker Road Station you can take a bus or an on-demand shuttle to much of the rest of the city.
The trains and buses are all covered by the same fare - as of October 2025, unlimited access to the DART network costs $3 for a three-hour period or $6 for the entire day.
For further information on riding DART, see the Get Around section of the Dallas article.
By bike
Although bike lanes, bike paths, and recreational bike trails do exist in some parts of Plano, it is a very large and spread-out city. A bike will not allow you to get to most places in a reasonable amount of time.

Buy
Shop Plano Market Square Mall
A small to medium-sized outlet mall. It's not as big and exciting as Grapevine Mills, but you can find some interesting things here if you don't mind poking around. The largest business here is Garden Ridge.
Shop Dallas Vintage Shop
While this is mainly a place to find costume supplies, it's also a very unique shop to find various used clothes, shoes, jewelry, clothing accessories, props, and anything related to dressing up. They're stocked floor-to-ceiling in this place, and the aisles are very, very narrow. This shop is unique in the fact that it's overflowing with personality and is possibly the most claustrophobic store in all of DFW.
Eat
Eat Chettinaad Palace
Cheap and delicious South Indian buffet.
Eat El Grande Burrito
This little place has very good homemade, authentic Mexican food. Has dine-in or carry-out and is very reasonably priced. Serves breakfast/lunch/dinner. Don't forget the sopaipillas for dessert!
Eat For You Taste of Poland
All the delightful flavors of Polish cuisine in an upscale art cafe. If Polish food is completely foreign to you, then try the Tate of Poland for $25. It's big enough for two. A small Polish foods market and deli are also on site.
Eat Little Gus's Cafe
Graat brunch.
Eat Simon's Sushi
Some of the best sushi in Plano. BYOB. Ask for the daily special menu.
Eat Thai Samba
Just a few of Thai Samba's signature dishes are pepper steak, garlic chicken, cashew chicken, seafood noodle and seafood chili paste, lemon grass, and crab meat fried rice, which satisfy meat lovers as well as non-meat eaters.
Drink
Drink Buffalo Wild Wings
This is part of a chain that has locations around the country. While this is officially a bar, they're still a good place to get some really good chicken wings, burgers, and various other finger foods. Almost everything there can be coated in one of 14 different sauces ranging from a mild and sweet BBQ sauce to their unbearably hot Blazin'.
Drink Fillmore Pub
An excellent pub in Plano's historic district. This is one of several pubs located close together, making for an excellent pub crawl. It's usually very noisy and crowded on the weekends.
Drink Jakes Joint
Great atmosphere with outside patio and palm trees
Drink Vickery Park
A great place to drink, with a wide variety of beers, ciders and mixed drinks. Along with that they also have some tasty finger foods and sandwiches to go along with your alcohol. People can reserve the large room in the back for social gatherings.
