Do Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail
Walk or cycle through the Blue Ridge Tunnel - a retired rail tunnel built in the 1850s, almost a mile long, that was an engineering marvel in its day. Use the Eastern Trailhead if you want a gentler access route from the parking lot to the tunnel entrance; the Western Trailhead offers a steeper and more challenging path to get in. Going from one trailhead to the other and back again is about 4.5 miles. Going from the Eastern Trailhead to the far end of the tunnel and back again is just under 3 miles. Bring a headlamp or flashlight - there are no lights in the tunnel! Consider bringing a jacket; the tunnel temperature is usually around 55-65F even when the weather outside is much warmer.
